Keep it short. No one reads more than the first paragraph. You have 10 seconds, make it count.”

-Eric Miller, “The five C’s of effective social network marketing

WHY SHORT BLOGS?

Study after study show that Americans have increasingly short attention spans. Apparently goldfish have a longer attention span than we do. How are you molding your content in light of this? I have to admit, I am one of the worst bloggers when it comes to being wordy. I like to work through the idea I am offering. This takes time. Odds are, if Eric Miller is right, you have either decided to finish this blog, or you left around the time you read the third sentence of this paragraph. Thanks for staying with me. You want to write short blogs. Short blogs appeal to more Americans than long blogs. Quality short blogs will help you reach and appeal to more Americans. Short blogs help you win big!

THE 3 C’S OF SHORT BLOGS IN THE AGE OF ATTENTION DEFICIT

  1. Concise: Write a rough draft. Commit to thinking through your data. After you write it, read it a few times. Try to make it simple. Short, simple sentences make blogs easier to read.
  2. Clear: Make sure you state your point… Clearly. Then restate it at the end of your blog. My point for this blog: Short blogs help you win big.
  3. Catchy: Make it easy to remember. Turn the point into a song. Create an anagram. Make an acrostic. You probably don’t want to make an “initialism”. Tell a joke (a good joke). Create a play on a famous tagline or quote. Repetition, repetition, repetition. Whatever you do, it needs to be easy to remember and apply.
You can accomplish these goals by using an infographic, video, or custom blog template. Whatever you decide to do, incorporate the 3 C’s and remembers to have fun. Americans don’t have time to read boring blogs. We can’t get that 10 seconds back…If you aren’t having fun then your readers probably aren’t either. Here’s an article on “Ten Ways to Improve that Boring Business Blog from Huffington Post. And remember: Short blogs help you win big!
